7 habits that support focus during exam season

Exam season is about managing energy, not just knowledge. Focus is not a character trait; it is a state shaped by sleep, nutrition and work rhythm. Here are seven habits research agrees on.

1. Fix the sleep schedule

Studying late and waking late may feel like a gain, but the consolidation of what is learned happens largely during sleep. Keeping bedtime and wake time fixed is the highest-return habit — even in exam week.

The same rule holds for the night before the exam: trusting what you know and going to bed early almost always trades better than revising into the small hours — the next morning’s clarity is worth more.

2. Don’t skip breakfast

The brain is the body’s most energy-demanding organ. A breakfast with protein and complex carbohydrates — eggs, cheese, whole-grain bread, walnuts — reduces blood-sugar swings through morning study.

3. Build a break rhythm

Attention does not hold steady for unbroken hours. Focus blocks of 25–45 minutes with real 5–10 minute breaks in between (screen-free!) beat marathon sessions for most students.

4. Put the phone in another room

Research shows that a phone’s mere visibility drains cognitive capacity. Silencing it is not enough; physically leaving it in another room during focus blocks is the most effective method.

5. Sprinkle movement in

Short walks and stretch breaks disperse the mental fog of long sitting blocks. A brisk 20–30 minute walk during the day visibly lifts the quality of evening sessions.

6. Don’t forget water

Even mild dehydration can lower attention and short-term memory performance. A bottle of water on the desk is the simplest guard against this silent productivity leak.

7. Simplify the workspace

Every object on the desk unrelated to the current topic is a small attention tax. A tidy desk, good lighting and, if possible, the same study corner every time — the brain links place with focus.

Not all at once: start with one habit

Trying to adopt a seven-item list in a single week usually ends with none of it sticking. The advice from behavioural research is clear: pick the easiest item, spend a week or two bedding in only that, then add another. A small but steady change always beats a grand revolution that lasts three days.

A note for parents as well: none of these habits settles in under pressure. Providing a calm study environment at home and honouring the sleep schedule together does more than any amount of telling.

In short

  • A fixed sleep schedule is exam week’s highest-return habit.
  • Blocks of 25–45 minutes plus screen-free breaks beat marathons.
  • Keep the phone out of sight — in another room.
