Ekran süresi: aileler için gerçekçi bir denge rehberiScreen time: a realistic balance guide for families
Screens are part of our lives — and guilt is part of most parents’. The aim here is not a perfect list of bans, but a workable balance that seats official recommendations, research findings and the realities of home life at the same table.

Kurumlar ne öneriyor? What do the institutions recommend?
The World Health Organization recommends no screen exposure under age 2 and at most one hour a day for ages 2-4. The American Academy of Pediatrics takes a similar line and, for school age, favours a “family media plan” built on one principle — screens must not steal from sleep, movement and face-to-face time — rather than a rigid hour count.
These recommendations should be read as a compass, not a penalty sheet: what matters is the week’s overall balance, not any single day.
Süre kadar içerik ve bağlamContent and context, as much as duration
Researchers increasingly agree on this: the “how many minutes” question is incomplete on its own. Slow-paced, age-appropriate content watched together is a very different experience from rapid-cut, autoplaying content in the same minutes. Watching together and talking — “what do you think happens next?” — turns the screen from passive consumption into a shared activity.
Context matters as much as duration: the dinner table and the last hour before sleep are the two slots where screens cost the most. Keeping just these two screen-free delivers a major improvement without counting total minutes at all.
Yasak yerine yapı kurmakStructure instead of bans
Sudden blanket bans are short-lived in most homes; what works is predictable structure. Settling in advance when and where screen time happens (“after school, in the living room, one episode”), softening the ending with a transition notice (“when this episode ends, we switch off”) and preferring a shared screen over a tablet visibly reduce the daily bargaining.
The weakest moment of the ending is the void: the “switch it off” command meets resistance when nothing takes its place. A ready bridge activity for after the screen — helping set the table, a quick game, preparing fruit together — turns the transition from a fight into a routine.
Model olmak: en zor maddeModelling: the hardest item
The research finding parents find most uncomfortable is this: one of the strongest predictors of children’s screen habits is their parents’ own. A rule set by an adult who checks their phone at the table loses credibility with the child. The good news: this means small whole-family rules (“phones in the basket at dinner”) do everyone good at once.
Kendinize dair bir notA note to yourself
Hasta günlerde, uzun yolculuklarda ve zor haftalarda ekranın imdada yetiştiği olur — bu sizi kötü ebeveyn yapmaz. Denge tek güne değil haftaya bakılarak kurulur; bozulan günün telafisi, ertesi gün sakin biçimde yapıya dönmektir. Ekran kullanımına dair kaygılarınız sürüyorsa, çocuğunuzu izleyen hekimle konuşmak her zaman iyi bir adımdır.On sick days, long journeys and hard weeks, the screen sometimes comes to the rescue — that does not make you a bad parent. Balance is built over the week, not a single day; the remedy for an off day is calmly returning to the structure tomorrow. If concerns about screen use persist, talking to your child’s doctor is always a good step.
ÖzetleIn short
DSÖ: 2 yaş altına ekran önerilmez; 2-4 yaşta günde en fazla 1 saat.WHO: no screens under 2; at most 1 hour daily at ages 2-4.
The dinner table and the pre-sleep hour — the two priority screen-free slots.
Bitişe geçiş uyarısı ve köprü etkinlik koyun; boşluk direnci büyütür.Add a transition notice and a bridge activity; a void feeds resistance.
Çocuğun ekran alışkanlığının en güçlü yordayıcısı, ebeveynin alışkanlığıdır.The strongest predictor of a child’s screen habits is the parent’s.
